Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often about ordering, artwork, paper, pricing, and turnaround. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Contact us and we’ll help you figure it out.
Getting Started
I'm not sure what type of printing I need. Can you help me figure it out?
Absolutely. Start by telling us what you're thinking about printing, what it will be used for, and when you need it. From there, we can help you work through the size, quantity, paper, finishing, and other details. You do not need to know printing terminology before contacting us.
What information do you need to quote my project?
We typically need to know the quantity, finished size, paper preference, and how you plan to supply the artwork. If you are not sure about paper or size, that is okay. Tell us what you are trying to accomplish and we can help you narrow down the options.
Can I talk with someone before I place an order?
Yes, and we encourage it. A quick conversation before you finalize your artwork or printing specifications can often help avoid unnecessary cost, file problems, or production delays.
How far in advance should I contact Savers?
For straightforward print-ready digital work, allowing 5-7 business days gives us plenty of flexibility, although many standard jobs are completed sooner. For projects involving design assistance, multiple printed pieces, signage, finishing, or event planning, we recommend starting the conversation at least 2-3 weeks ahead. Trade show displays and other items that require hardware or outside sourcing should ideally be discussed 10-15 business days in advance.
Files & Artwork
What file format should I send?
A print-quality PDF is our preferred format. Ideally, the PDF should be created at the correct finished size and include 1/8" bleed and crop marks when the design prints all the way to the edge. Other file formats may also be usable. If you are not sure what you have, send it to us and we will take a look.
What does ‘print-ready’ mean?
Print-ready simply means the file is set up so we can move it into production without needing to rebuild or significantly modify the artwork. The correct size, adequate image quality, and proper bleed are some of the things we look for. You do not need to know how to evaluate all of these yourself. We will let you know if we see a problem.
What is bleed, and do I need it?
Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the finished edge of the printed piece. It allows us to trim the piece without leaving an unwanted white edge. If your background, photo, or color extends all the way to the edge, we generally need 1/8" bleed on all sides. If your design already has white space around the edges, bleed may not be necessary.
Can Savers check my file before printing?
Yes. We review the supplied file to determine whether it is usable for the size and type of job being ordered. If we see something that could affect the finished result, we will let you know and help determine the next step.
Can Savers fix a file that isn't set up correctly?
Often, yes. Minor resizing, centering, positioning, or other simple production adjustments can usually be handled without making the process complicated. If the file requires actual design changes, artwork reconstruction, or significant editing in programs such as Illustrator or Photoshop, additional artwork charges may apply. We will discuss that with you before proceeding.
Can I send something I designed in Canva?
Yes. Canva can work very well for printed materials. For the best results, turn on bleed, extend backgrounds and images into the bleed area, and export the design as a PDF for printing. We also recommend opening and reviewing the exported PDF before sending it to us. If you run into trouble, you can often share your Canva design with us and we can help identify what needs to be adjusted.
Can I send Word or PowerPoint files?
Word and PowerPoint files need to be converted to PDF before we print them. If you are unsure how to do that, contact us and we can help guide you through the process.
AI-Generated Artwork
Can I use an AI-generated image or design for printing?
Usually, yes. AI-generated artwork can work very well for print as long as the file is large enough and has enough resolution for the finished size. PNG files are commonly generated by AI platforms and may be usable, but we need to know the intended print size before we can determine whether the quality is sufficient.
Why can't Savers always ‘just use’ the AI file I send?
AI platforms frequently create images without knowing the final printed size, bleed requirements, or resolution needed for professional printing. An image may look excellent on a phone or computer screen and still be too small or low-resolution to print well. If the file is not ready for production, we will explain what needs to change rather than simply printing something that may not give you a good result.
What should I tell an AI tool when creating artwork for printing?
Give the AI tool as much information as possible before it creates the artwork. At minimum, include the exact finished size, whether the design should print all the way to the edge, 1/8" bleed on all four sides when needed, the highest resolution available, a request for a print-quality PDF when available, a high-resolution PNG if PDF output is not available, and instructions to keep important wording, logos, and design elements safely inside the finished trim area.
Sample prompt: “Create this artwork at a finished size of [WIDTH] x [HEIGHT] inches. Extend the background and any edge-to-edge design elements an additional 1/8 inch beyond all four sides for print bleed. Keep important text, logos, and design elements safely inside the finished trim area. Create the artwork at the highest resolution available for professional printing. Provide a print-quality PDF if available; otherwise provide a high-resolution PNG.”
AI can help create the artwork, but it does not automatically make the file print-ready.
Paper & Print Choices
What paper should I use for my project?
That depends on what you are printing, how the piece will be used, and the look and feel you want. If you have had the item printed before and liked the paper, bring us a sample and we can often recommend something similar. Otherwise, we will usually start by asking whether you prefer a glossy, silk/matte, or uncoated finish and guide you from there.
What is the difference between glossy, silk/matte, and uncoated paper?
Glossy paper has a smooth coated finish that works well for colorful marketing materials. Silk or matte-coated paper has a smoother, softer appearance with less shine. Uncoated paper has a more natural feel, similar to traditional copy paper but available in much heavier weights. We can show you printed examples if you are unsure which direction you prefer.
Can Savers recommend the most economical paper option?
Yes. If paper is not an important part of your design, tell us your priorities and budget and we will recommend an option that works well for the project without adding unnecessary cost.
Can I see or feel paper samples before deciding?
Yes. Local customers are encouraged to stop in and look at printed samples, particularly when paper thickness, finish, or feel is important. We may not always have an exact finished example of your specific project, but we can usually show you printed samples on several different stocks.
Pricing & Quantity
How is the price of a printing job determined?
Several things affect pricing, including quantity, finished size, paper, number of printed sides, cutting, folding, binding, and other finishing. How efficiently the piece fits on our production sheets can also make a meaningful difference in cost.
How do I know how many pieces I should order?
We usually start with what you know about your audience, event, previous orders, and future needs. We may also show you pricing at nearby quantities. Sometimes moving from a very small quantity to the next pricing level costs surprisingly little. Other times, we may recommend ordering fewer pieces if we think you are likely to end up with unused or outdated material.
Is ordering more always cheaper?
The cost per piece usually decreases as quantity increases, but that does not automatically mean you should print more. If materials contain dates, prices, employees, services, or other information that could change, printing a smaller quantity may save more money in the long run.
Can Savers suggest ways to reduce the cost of my project?
Yes. We may recommend adjusting the quantity, paper, finished size, or production method. Even small changes can sometimes improve how efficiently a piece fits on a press sheet and reduce waste without changing the purpose of the project.
Turnaround & Proofing
How long does a typical digital printing job take?
Most standard digital printing is quoted at approximately 2-3 business days, and many jobs are completed within 1-2 business days depending on our production schedule. Jobs involving large quantities or additional finishing may require more time.
Can Savers handle rush printing?
Often, yes. Many short-run standard jobs can be produced the same day or next business day when our production schedule allows. Each request is evaluated based on quantity, materials, finishing, and current workload.
Do you charge rush fees?
In most cases, we do not charge an additional rush fee for work we can accommodate within our normal production process. If an outside supplier charges us to expedite an item, or expedited shipping is required, those additional costs are passed along to the customer.
What if I need part of my order immediately?
Ask us about a partial delivery. If you do not need the entire quantity at once, we may be able to produce enough for your immediate need and complete the balance afterward. This can sometimes solve a deadline problem without forcing the entire project through production at once.
Will I receive a proof before printing?
If Savers creates, sets up, or changes your artwork, we will send a proof for approval before production. If you supply a print-ready PDF and we are printing it exactly as provided, we generally do not send the same file back for approval unless you request a proof or we see something that needs your attention.
What should I check when reviewing a proof?
Please review all wording, spelling, dates, phone numbers, addresses, quantities, positioning, and other content carefully. Once a proof is approved, the customer is responsible for the accuracy of the approved content.
Print with a Plan
What does Savers mean by ‘Print with a Plan’?
Print with a Plan means involving us before every printing decision has already been made. When possible, talk with us before finalizing the artwork. We can discuss how the piece will be used, whether it needs to work for one event or several, what quantity makes sense, and how size, paper, and production choices may affect the cost. Sometimes a simple decision, such as leaving a date off a piece that could be reused later, can prevent unnecessary reprinting.
Why should I contact Savers before finalizing my design?
Printing decisions can affect the design. The finished size, folds, paper, bleed, quantity, and how efficiently the piece fits on a production sheet can all influence cost and production. Talking with us early gives us an opportunity to identify those things before you spend time creating artwork that may need to be changed later.
Can Savers help improve something I've printed before?
Yes. If you have the original digital file, we can review it and suggest changes to the size, paper, layout, quantity, or production method that may improve the finished piece or help control cost.
What if I only have a printed sample and not the original artwork?
Bring or send us the printed piece and we'll take a look. In some cases we may be able to work from what you have. If the artwork needs to be recreated, additional design or setup charges may apply, and we'll discuss that with you before moving forward.
Why work with a local printer instead of ordering online?
Online ordering can work well when you already know exactly what you need. Savers is a better fit when you want someone to look at the entire project with you, answer questions, recommend options, catch potential problems, or help you make decisions before the job reaches production. You are working with a local team that can help you make printing decisions instead of simply processing an uploaded file.
